Acclaimed Edinburgh-based Theatre company Bare Productions return to this years Fringe with an amateur production of Stephen Sondheim's Into The Woods.
A somewhat twisted re-telling of intertwining classic fairytales from Cinderella to Little Red Riding Hood, Into the Woods is a notoriously long musical theatre show and Bare Productions latest offering did feel like it dragged in parts.
As with most Fringe productions the stage set is minimal, but what is on display is good. The narrative is so full of rich imagery and big characters it's very easy to use your imagination for a show like this.
Known for giving amateurs the opportunity to perform in professional standard shows, Bare have really excelled with the costuming this year. A highlight of the show, the costumes are so good they look like they could have been plucked from a West End run of the show.
Performance-wise some of the cast faired better than others vocally, although sound levels / mixing in the venue and mic issues may have been to blame rather than the performers themselves. However some cast members still managed to stand out with superb performances coming from the Witch played by Felicity Halfpenny, Little Red played by Rebecca Drever and the Baker’s Wife played by Cathy Geddie.
There is a strong live orchestra accompanying those on stage and their playing complimented the vocals beautifully.
