On the day of his mums funeral, uni dropout Sean is coaxed into buying an ice cream van by his audacious pal, Daro. Full of dreams, sugar, and not a lot of business acumen, the pair enter the world of mobile confectionary hoping to make a new life for themselves and a tidy profit in the meantime. Can Sean and Daro Flake it until they make it?!
I absolutely adored this! The fast paced script by Laurie Motherwell is full of witty observations and exquisite dialogue, delivered perfectly by first-rate actors.
Sean Connor (Sean) and Cameron Fulton (Daro) are a charismatic duo, and their sharp but cruel banter rings true of Glasgow working-class friendships. There is so much content and so many wisecracks delivered in this 75 minute play, I firmly believe it would take 2 hours to perform with any other accent.
The Whippy Brothers are hilarious, loveable, daft but determined. You cannot help but root for them, and I loved that this portrayal of a Scottish male friendship had so much heart. Sean's' disbelief and facial expressions at some of the antics his pal gets up to are priceless.; but he loves him anyway.
The set and lighting are beautiful; the colourful ice-cream van and great props all add interest and intrigue on stage. There's music, there's humour and a lot of swearing! This production feels fresh, intelligent and engaging from beginning to end.
'Sean and Daro Flake it 'til they make it' is a new gem in the Scottish Theatre repository, and I hope it runs for many years to come. Until then, I highly recommend you catch this while you can at The Traverse Theatre this August. I can't wait to see it again. Joyous!
