Spuds is a sung-through musical comedy about grief, greed and grease.
"When David MacGonigle’s wife dies, his perfect middle-class life collapses around him. But a freak occurrence, involving mouldy chips and Iron Brew, leads to his discovery of a new designer drug, Spuds. Soon he has built the ultimate criminal empire, but at what cost?"
Written and directed by Andy McGregor, and starring Richard Conlon, Joanne McGuiness and Ewan Somers, Spuds is absolute genius!
A pure delight from beginning to end. My face hurt from grinning.
My husband said 'that was better than Les Mis'. Surely there is no higher compliment!?
The talent of the three actors on stage was outrageous. Are they even human?!
The musical direction, writing and staging were outstanding. I will be looking out for productions from Sleeping Warrior theatre company and Andy McGregor in future. This production is a prime example of what can be achieved with a relatively low budget and a small but exceptional cast. It was all the better for having 'cheap' props - they made it funnier.
I cannot rave about this show enough. The songs are still playing in my head. The local Glasgow / Scottish humour was on point and delivered with immaculate timing and deadpan faces. The
audience was in bits.
This show has been tweaked and improved since its original staging at A Play, A Pie and A Pint at Oran Mor. And it deserves a longer life and a wider audience. I hope something comes of this.
